Creating Organisations That Feel Like Communities

The Villaging approach to belonging at work

What would it mean for an organisation to feel like a village? This article explores the Villaging concept — a leadership approach centred on belonging, shared ritual and collective care — and how it can transform the culture and resilience of teams.

Creating Organisations That Feel Like Communities

What does it mean to village?

The word 'village' evokes something that many modern organisations have lost: a sense of collective belonging, mutual care and shared purpose. In a village, people know each other's names. They notice when someone is absent. They celebrate together and support each other through difficulty.

Villaging is the practice of bringing those qualities intentionally into organisational life. It is not a programme or a toolkit. It is a way of being — a leadership orientation that asks: how do we create the conditions where people feel they truly belong?

The four conditions of community

Our research identifies four essential conditions for community to flourish in organisations: kindness, connection, ritual and time. When these conditions are present, something shifts. People stop performing and start showing up as themselves. Collaboration becomes genuine. Creativity returns. And leaders discover a new kind of authority — not the authority of position, but the authority of trust.

"Belonging is not a nice-to-have. It is the foundation on which everything else in an organisation is built."
